THE THOUGHT OF MAKING this yearly trip with anyone but Fin made her glad he was standing behind her. Not that he would be able to see the tears in her eyes. Between the goggles and the light snow that had been falling for the past hour or so, he’d have to be pretty close to notice a detail like that—and one thing the man didn’t want was to be that close to her.

She just had to hold out until she could make her father force him to use some vacation time. Hopefully as much as a fortnight or two. Only then would she allow herself to grieve what would never be. What she’d probably always known could never be. Just focus on the job today and then avoid him as much as possible until he headed for a tropical paradise—or wherever someone like Finley Hughes might consider a perfect vacation spot.

The first stop on her list was McCrory Point, named after the first settler on the islands. At fifteen hundred meters, it was their tallest mountain. Not very big considering Mt. Everest was more than five times larger. Still, it attracted a fair number of novice climbers every year. The foothills' surrounding the small range was home to a wide range of wildlife too.

To the west were the ice caves along the coastline. They would be heading there when she was finished here. She wished the sun were out because the rays reflecting off the ice was always beautiful. Still, they were always a sight to behold and she made sure to include a few on the website.

That’s where they would take their lunch break, enjoying thermoses of Laura’s chicken stew, a favorite of most everyone at the palace now. Briannon loved it too, but wasn’t sure she’d enjoy it today. Knowing this would be the last time she’d be spending more than a few minutes with Fin had pretty much killed her appetite.

“Better make the ice caves the last stop if this snow doesn’t slow down,” he said half an hour later, posing with a rifle aimed at nothing in the distance. He hated being her model but realized she was right in that no one would recognize him in his winter clothes.

“The storm isn’t due for hours,” she argued, adjusting the lens so the background would be blurred. “Turn a little to your right please. There. That’s good.”

She snapped a few shots at different angles, then had to pull the mittens back on over the gloves. Her hands were half frozen and it would take the nearly three kilometers to the caves for them to thaw out again. But Fin was right. The snow had started falling harder. Enough so that she could barely make out the coastline in the distance. The last thing she wanted was to be stranded in the middle of nowhere because of her stubbornness. No. That was the second to last thing. The last was to be stranded with him.
